Dia De Los Muertos and Samhain

On December 5, 2023

Between October 31st and November 2nd, people in the Americas celebrate Dia de los Muertos while those of Celtic descent may celebrate Samhain. Since the North Fork Valley is home to people of many origin places, we celebrate it all! Near the community garden in downtown Paonia, many hands come together to create a community Ofrenda, or altar of offering, facilitated by The Western Colorado Migrant and Rural Coalition, The Creative Coalition and The Learning Council. This tradition has been held in this community for many years now and the more that we commemorate the loss and the lives of our beloved dead, the more that we feel the importance of community connections, as well as the support and love that we feel around these powerful transitions.

The event was beautiful and came alive with bright orange and yellow marigolds and other flowers from local farms, pumpkins, a warm fire, faces painted, a kids craft area, traditional flags, photos and offerings. The ceremony was facilitated by Angeles Mendez, the President of the Western Colorado Mirant and Rural Coalition, with prayer and songs followed by a beautiful song featuring NFSIS students and Samuela Akert.

Thanks to all of the people who helped make this event a success including PELA especially Theo and Bodie, folks who helped with set up: Sunny and Ruth, Madeleine, Anastacia, Emily, Whit, Skye, and Amy and of course Bonnie for organizing the face painting. Thanks to the WCMRC for providing Pan Muerto. We hope the ancestors of this land and the ancestors of each of us are fed, happy, and loved.
